Magnolias are trees or shrubs that naturally grow in Eastern Asia, and North and South America. Their’s outstanding feature is the formation of large, tulip-shaped flowers in colors ranging from whites, through yellows and reds, to purples. Numerous flowers develop in March, April or May, before the first leaves appear. Some species bloom again in autumn, but not so spectacularly as in spring. Many cultivated varieties (e.g. “Ann”,”Betty”, “Susan”, “Pinkie”) are interspecies hybrids, which flower at earlier age and have more impressive flowers than the parent plants. Most magnolias prefer fertile, acidic, well-drained soils and sunny positions. |
